Project Overview
Breheny Civil Engineering is delivering improvements to Junctions 8, 9 and 14 along the A2011 Crawley Avenue, which connects with the M23, on behalf of West Sussex County Council.
The scheme will improve the operation and resilience of these key junctions, helping to support future growth, improve traffic flow and make journeys more reliable for residents, businesses and road users travelling through the Crawley area.
What's changing?
🛣️Improvements to the road network
The scheme includes improvements at Junction 8 on the A2011 Crawley Avenue, including road widening, carriageway reconstruction and changes to the existing slip roads. The existing westbound on-slip will be removed and traffic will be transferred to a new junction arrangement.
At Junction 9, where the A2011 meets B2036 Balcombe Road, the works include widening the slip roads, constructing new sections of carriageway and footway, and changes to the junction layout.
At Junction 14, works include renewal of the highway infrastructure, including pavement construction and associated improvements to the surrounding area.
🚶Improved walking and cycling connections
New and improved pedestrian facilities will be provided as part of the works. At Junction 8 on Crawley Avenue, this includes a new footway through the underpass area and improvements to the cycleway connection.
At Junction 9 on Balcombe Road, new footway will be constructed alongside the widened road layout, with tactile paving provided at relevant pedestrian areas and traffic islands. Footpath and island works are also included within the wider improvements around Junction 14.
🚦Improved traffic signals and crossings
The scheme includes new and improved traffic signal infrastructure, together with associated ducting, sockets and cabling. New and modified traffic islands, kerbing, signage and road markings will also support the revised junction layouts.
At Junction 8, the new traffic signals will form part of the revised junction arrangement, while Junction 9 will also receive new traffic signal infrastructure as part of the junction improvements.
🌳Landscaping and environmental improvements
The scheme includes drainage, landscaping and environmental works across the three junction areas.
At Junction 8, works include a new drainage ditch and earthwork bund, together with drainage infrastructure associated with the new road layout. The existing westbound on-slip being removed will be perforated, topsoiled and seeded.
At Junction 9, verges will be resoiled and seeded following construction, with new fencing installed as part of the finishing works.
At Junction 14, the works include site clearance, removal of existing stockpiled material, construction of a drainage basin and associated drainage works, followed by topsoiling and planting.
When is the work happening?
Construction is programmed to begin by the end of September 2026, with completion expected in late August 2027.
How will we minimise disruption?
We have carefully planned and phased the works to minimise disruption to local residents, businesses and road users. A significant amount of the construction will be completed offline, away from live traffic, wherever practicable. This will allow works to progress without affecting traffic flows and reduce the amount of time that traffic management is needed on the existing road network.
Where works need to take place alongside live traffic, temporary traffic management will be required. This may include lane closures, temporary traffic signals and, at certain stages, road closures or other restrictions.
Where closures are necessary, activities will be coordinated to make the best possible use of each phase, allowing as much work as practicable to be completed while the traffic management is in place. This approach will help minimise the duration and extent of restrictions.
We'll keep local residents, businesses and road users informed throughout the works, with regular project updates and advance notice of significant traffic management changes.
